Traditional Tibetan medicine teaches that since ignorance is regarded as the primary cause of all suffering, healing begins with insight into the sources of our distress. By sensitizing ourselves to become aware of subtle imbalances in the body’s energy patterns and attending to seasonal influences, circumstances and behavior that could otherwise result in disease can largely be avoided.
The Medicine Buddha is known as the Master of Healing, and is traditionally depicted in a deep blue colour, holding a jar filled with medicine nectar in his left hand, while his right hand rests on his right knee, holding the stem of the myrobalan plant between thumb and first finger. It is believed that the traditional Medicine Buddha practice is a powerful method for healing oneself and others, and also for overcoming the “inner sickness” of attachment, hatred and ignorance. This beautiful piece shows the Medicine Buddha centred against a backdrop of healing herbs.
