Welcome to The Garden! We are thrilled to announce we are now open and look forward to welcoming you here! We are a young, married South African/British couple with a dream which emerged in 2010 somewhere between Mozambique, India and Zimbabwe… When we took custodianship of our beautiful land, it was completely undeveloped, so our first year was spent getting the basics in place: fencing, roads, running water, solar energy and a place for us to live! Today, The Garden has become a peaceful sanctuary for a small but growing community of like-hearted friends to escape to … and we share it with our baby Tara and toddler Kai, 5 dogs, 4 cats, 3 bee hives and a growing flock of free-range chickens!
(1) We believe changing the world starts at home; we are mindful of how our lives affect our local and global communities, and seek to make choices in our day to day lives as well as in our business which make a positive difference. (2) We are profoundly grateful for all the opportunities we have had in our own lives and are committed to doing what we can to share what we have with others, and to create opportunities for those less fortunate. We aim to maximise economic benefits to our neighbouring communities through sourcing labour, products and services as locally as possible as The Garden expands. (3) We are conscious of many of the destructive habits and practices in modern life and industry which harm the environment we depend on. We aim to live and work with as light a footprint as possible, and promote sustainable agriculture, eco-building, and alternative energy sources.
The gift of generosity
People are surprised to hear that we don’t have any prices on our menu. We have elected instead to serve lunch to our guests and make our retreat facilities available based on the time-honoured practice of “dana”. Dana is a Pali word meaning generosity and an ancient practice in Indian and especially Buddhist traditions. In the act of giving we develop our ability to let go, cultivate a spirit of caring, and acknowledge the inter-connectedness that we all share. The practice of dana gives us an opportunity to give whole-heartedly, without expecting anything in return. It is the practice of unconditional giving.
From the start, developing The Garden has been an act of service. When we left our jobs, we looked forward to our new lifestyle, not realising that we were facing even more work just this time for no pay! No matter how many times we ran the numbers, the investment never made any business sense – but it wasn’t about that. Now we are in a position to offer The Garden as our gift, with donations covering costs and going back into further developing The Garden and The Garden Community. We ask that guests please give generously in line with the value of their experience with us, remembering all the food and drinks are freshly prepared with love on the premises using high quality ingredients which are organic wherever possible – and being mindful of the immense amount of work that has gone into developing this beautiful space and is required to maintain and further develop it for all to share.
Giving breeds giving, and perhaps this small centre of giving will have a ripple effect into our broader community … So much of today’s culture and society is focused on getting; with a little more focus on giving we could really change the world.
A few practical notes
Children are welcome at The Garden, but we do request that they are supervised by a parent/caregiver at all times. Many of our events are “family-friendly” – please check our calendar.
Please wear sturdy, closed shoes and remember sunblock/sun-hats if walking the labyrinth as it is not shaded.
We strive to develop The Garden as a retreat in harmony with nature; due to our conservation efforts, wildlife is returning to the area, indigenous plants are re-emerging and birdlife is increasing. Please stick to designated pathways and do not pick any flowers. Come prepared for a “bushveld” experience!
